TOY REVIEW: Ant-Man

Nanananananananananananana.. ANT-MAN!

Finally we got the Hank Pym that we all need in our collection. We got the Yellow Jack, but nothing beats the ol' Ant-Man costume! We got our first glimpse of this figure during the MU days. This was supposed to be a 2-packed with Moon Knight, but due to some reasons it was cancelled an no one had a clue why.

One logical speculation stated that the reason why it was on hold, is that they would tie it with the then-rumored Ant-Man movie. Seems reasonable enough, however it came to everyone's surprise that it was included earlier than expected in the Infinite Series. Upon seeing the preview picture, nothing has change from the 2-pack version. It still utilizes the old buck, which was used for the Spidey in 2-pack with Capt. Britain.

L-R: MIS Ant-man / MU Classic Avengers Boxset
The figure came with a miniature version of himself, similar to the one that came with the Classic Avengers boxset. However this one didn't came with the ant/fly which he can ride on which makes him look silly in that pose. Paint app seems to differ at some parts as well. It's a great addition to the figure, but they could have also included the one that came with Yellow Jacket to re-create a shrinking effect.

Sculpt:

PROS:

  • Decent sculpting on the helmet shape. Seems a bit too rounded though.

 CONS:

  • Where are his antennas?
  •  Wish they could have embossed the linings on his body or perhaps add his trademark 'H' belt holster.
  • Wish the helmet was removable or even just a hidden head underneath. Not sure though, but it seems possible.
UPDATE: There's indeed a head underneath! Or a face for that matter!

WTF?!
Paint:
PROS:
  •  Loving the shade of red and blue that they used.
  •  Decent paint app on the helmet and the eyes.
    CONS:

    • Uneven shading of parts. Shading should be continuous. After seeing this, they seem to have done them separately. It's suppose to add depth, and act as a shadow however the abrupt cut of color makes it look uhm - weak.

        Articulation:

                  CONS:
        • I'm going to be a bit biased, but I never liked this body mold. Not because it's old, but because its legs tends to easily fall of! Especially on the hip joint! Posing him and simply raising his legs is such a pain in the a**! It keeps popping off!

        Size Comparison:

MIS Wasp, MIS Ant-Man, MU Yellow Jacket

        Overall Grade

It's great to have finally own an Ant-Man that's within regular scale with my collection. I mean, Yellow Jacket has been out for a long time now, however Hank Pym will always be Ant-Man for me despite various aliases. Figure wise, it's underwhelming. There are so many things that could have made this a better figure. Though, considering that his was made pre-Jim Lee Cyclops wave, we can forgive them for that. I'm pretty much sure MU and ML collectors alike would want this figure for their collection that's why I still believe this figure would sell. It's one of those figures that are quite meh, but still people would get them for the character. As we all know, Pym is an integral member of the Avengers.
