REVIEW: Omega Red

Finally! Another figure review after being gone for quite a long time! And what better way to break the ice than to do a review on Marvel Universe last hurrah's chase figure, Omega Red! Yep, you heard that right, it's announced to be the last wave for the line before it rebrands itself for the coming year. Let's do hope that the change in brand doesn't affect the 3 3/4's improvement specially in terms of articulation. So without further ado let's get on with the review.

If you can see various toy forums, both local and international, it's not new to see threads such as "top marvel universe wishlist." I guarantee you, that most if not all included Omega Red in their top 10. And that is what Hasbro just did just before it plans to change the brands name to Avengers. As the new name suggests, we might not get any more mutants in the near future so it's only fitting that we get Omega Red just before the X-men drought kicks in.

I have not read too much about Omega Red in the comics, as I am a self-confessed comic noob. However, I've always known him to have epic battles with Wolverine. I grew up watching X-men's TV series back in the 90's and he's definitely one of the villains that I can instantly identify back when I was a kid. I also remember having an Omega Red figure back then, with the retractable tentacles if I remember correctly. Those were the days :) Okay let's not go too far from the review. I was surprised that this wave came earlier than I expected. Got this through Sir Eric (Thunderbreak) at SRP price. I was glad to have gotten him without having to pay scalper price. As of the moment Omega Red is being sold around P1,300-P2,000 in the secondary market! Damn those scalpers.

Where did I acquire it?:  Sir Eric's Online distribution
How much?: Set of 6/ Php 600.00 each (approx $12.00)
Condition during acquisition: MOC

Packaging:
Still the same card packaging from Marvel Universe sans the collectible comic shot in front. At the back we have Sleepwalker as the card character for the series.

What's up with Omega Red's lame pose at the back of the card?! Seriously Hasbro, that's the best one you could think of? SMH.

Accessories:

Omega Red comes with his force field recharging bed which he uses to replenish his life force. It fits him quite well and it does look like its comic counterpart.
Nah.. just kidding. I just didn't want to leave this area blank. It doesn't come with anything. Not even one of those collectible comic sh*t shot. I miss the days when they had stands, and those file cards. Cheap Hasbro.

Sculpt:

PROS:

  • The face sculpt is spot-on! It pretty much resembles the Omega Red that we all know.  From the grin expression on his face, plus the sculpted details on his cheek, at the flow of his hair. it's hands down perfect for me.
  •  Sculpted omega insignia.
  • The details on his strap in front is pretty decent.

    CONS:
    • His ponytail seems like it could easily be torn apart from the head. There seems to be just a thin piece of plastic holding them together thus making it flimsy so it's best to handle it with care.

    •  The tentacles seems to be too plain and flimsy. They could have at least inserted a wire inside to make it poseable just like what they did to Whiplash's whips in the IM2 line.

    • The belt and the strap on his back has no texture whatsoever. The same goes with his boots. I mean, it's too plain for my taste and it could have gotten added details just to give more accent to the figure.

      Paint:

      PROS:

      • The paint application is pretty decent when it comes to painting the insignia. Same goes for the silver on his cheeks.
        CONS:

        • The greyish-bluish wash on white is a good idea, however the execution is a fail for me. I don't know but it seems lately they've had trouble applying washes on white based figures such as what they did with the new Punisher. It looks sloppy and seems to be everywhere. Again, washes are meant to give depth. Come on Hasbro, thin down your washes.
        • Not a fan of the pearlescent white the they used on his straps and pads. It just seems so plain that it didn't give justice to the sculpted things on his strap.
        • Perhaps an overall wash could have made the figure much, much better in terms of aesthetic. I mean, he just looks sooooooo clean.

          Articulation:

                    PROS:
          • Omega Red uses the new body mold that was introduced with Hercules. It fits him well, and the articulation of these new molds are top notch.
          CONS
          • Pads hinder the full range of motion of his shoulders
          • A forearm swivel could have been helpful in posing him with his tentacles.

          Overall Grade

Overall the figure is a great addition to one's collection, and it's Omega-freakin'-Red that we're talking about! I mean who wouldn't want to have him? However figure wise, it seems a bit too plain for my taste. I imagined him to look a bit more menacing! As I said, he looks too clean! Maybe a silver-ish grey-ish touch to his white, could have given him a much intimidating look. But then again maybe that's just me. Though I don't see these gripes affecting the value of this figure along the way as  collector's didn't call this the "Omega Red wave" for nothing.
