REVIEW: Whirlwind

Just in time for the cold and windy weather here in the Philippines. Here's my take on Marvel Infinite Series Wave 2's Whirlwind!

Whirlwind as seen in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
Being a late comic follower, I was first introduced to this character in one of the episode of the cancelled series, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. He was one of the constantly appearing villains in that series. Later on I read that he was a member of several Masters of Evil faction in the comics. And with the announcement of Whirlwind being included in this wave got me excited, since I already got the SDCC Masters of Evil boxset and he would be perfect displayed beside Zemo, Tigershark and Radioactive Man! His inclusion in the line wasn't that surprising since his art illustration already appeared on the boxset of the SDCC Helicarrier back in 2012 as seen below which gave a hint that he was coming up.

Like with Death's Head, this was made available here in the Philippines, via an event distribution. It was sold as set of 5 that includes Marvel's Death's Head, Red She-hulk, Whirlwind, Eric Masterson Thor and the reissued Yellow Jacket.

Here's A quick look on the complete Wave 2 of the Infinite Series.

Whirlwind, Death's Head, Eric Masterson, Red She-Hulk, Steve Rogers, Yellow Jacket, Beta Ray Bill

Whirlwind custom by Escorpcustoms
Like most of the 4 inch Marvel figures, it doesn't come with any. Wish they had a whirlwind accessory/stand for this guy as seen above. Damn I miss those days when they had the file card and stands for each characters.

Sculpt:

PROS:

  • Very on point with the classic Whirlwind design.

  •  Decent sculpting of the razor saws on his forearm.

 CONS:
  • Not much gripe on the sculpt of the figure, though there's not much texture going on with the figure but that's the them staying true to its original design.
  •  The face and the mask is just one piece. I was hoping there would be a mystery face underneath like with the Bag Head Spidey, Mysterio & Juggernaut. However this one obviously doesn't have a separate face behind the mask. Bummer.

  •  The cut on the side of his armor bothers me. Wish they could have just made it connected with each other.
Scratch marks were made due to the helmet
rubbing with the chest plate when turning his head.
  •  Helmet sculpt hinders head articulation.

    Paint:

    PROS:

    • Digging the metallic finish of the paint, both on his armor and body.
    • Clean and decent paint application of the eye despite having little window space.

      CONS:

      • Different shades of green! I don't see the point in making the green of his armor different from his boots.

          Articulation:

                    PROS:
          • Covers up basic standard articulation as it uses the old Hawkeye/ Wrecking Crew body.
          CONS
          • Could have been better have they used the newer male buck.
          •  The head articulation is hindered by the helmet! He can barely look side to side, and can't look up as well!

          Overall Grade

Whirlwind is a great addition in this line, as it adds to the Masters of Evil lineup! I've always loved it when they do villains! You can never have too much of them! However figure-wise it's a meh for me. Nothing much on the sculpt and articulation that makes it an amazing figure. However, it is Whirlwind so I can easilly overlook those things as I need this in my collection. Would I recommend this figure? Uhm, to casual collectors, maybe not that much however if you're an avid collector I say go for it! As a stand alone figure it makes no impact, however when you place it beside other villains it does make it look much better.

          1. Dave is one of my favorite villains so I love this figure. I think they had a perfect chance to create a variant using flesh colored torso and arms and green colored legs (and bracelets without the saws). I would happily buy both versions.
